Yesterday I found myself out and about enjoying the clean air finally. It has been hard to be cooped up inside while our neighbors are on fire. I needed a break from the monotony of quarantine so I took a walk near the university, UC Berkely. There is this darling little corner cafe on College Ave called Baker & Commons. I had eaten here before a while ago and so I was very interested to see what they were offering for lunch. At this point, you guys can assess that I like me a good salad. Yes, I do, and Baker & Commons had me in heaven.
First off, let me begin by detailing how I was so warmly greeted by the young college student working the counter. I inquired into the soup of the day, and I went on ahead and ordered the grilled nectarine salad. He was so nice to me during the whole of our interaction and I appreciated all of his attention and care with taking my order. That salad hit home. Oh My Gosh. It came with sliced fennel – that could have been pickled. goat cheese, roasted almonds and wild mixed greens. You guys it was ahmazing. I was in Food Network heaven in my mind playing ‘taste it then make it’, as I tried to figure out just WHAT was in my little salad that was giving me life. I would need to recreate this masterpiece for myself eventually…… I believe the dressing was a honey mustard vinaigrette.
The staff at this place are so pleasing and kind. I ordered even ordered a dessert for later. I love it when I get quality / equitable service that stands out for me. Those are the places I make a point to promote because of the atmosphere of belonging that they take the time to cultivate in their space. Being hospitable is a choice, and for me it is often the decision between where I choose to spend my money. And I love to tip. Thank you Baker & Commons for making my solo day a special one with your healthy and wholesome food.
